Palataki (Thessaloniki)

The Palataki (Παλατάκι, "little palace") is the popular name for a large neoclassical building in the municipality of Kalamaria. Officially it is known as the Governor's House (Κυβερνείο).
It was built during the 1950s to serve as the residence of the minister of Northern Greece. In 1963 was given to the Greek Royal Family as a royal residence/palace; but the latter stayed there only for one night, preferring instead the old Méditerranée Hotel on the city center's seafront, for their stays in the city. In 1968, during the Greek military junta of 1967–74, and following the flight of the royal family to Italy, it was given back to the Ministry of Northern Greece.
After 1974 it was used as a residence by the Minister for Macedonia and Thrace, the Prime Minister and later President of Greece, Konstantinos Karamanlis, during his visits to the city. Nowadays having no specific purpose and in need of redevelopment plans, it is used periodically for concerts, galleries or expositions - taking advantage of it as an architectural backdrop, and its location.
